According to a newly published support document from Microsoft, the company has released out-of-band update KB5061906 for Windows Server 2022 to address an issue causing unexpected freezing or rebooting of Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines.
This problem does not affect standard Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines. The primary impact is on Microsoft Azure confidential virtual machines—specialized instances designed to safeguard the data processing lifecycle and ensure information remains protected against unauthorized access.
Microsoft attributes the issue to a flaw in the direct transmission path of Guest Physical Address (GPA) data, which may cause confidential VMs to intermittently become unresponsive or reboot unexpectedly. This behavior can disrupt service availability and may require manual intervention by IT administrators.
The newly released out-of-band (OOB) update supersedes all previous updates and resolves the issue. However, KB5061906 is not distributed via automatic update channels, nor can it be installed through standard update checks. IT administrators must manually download the update in MSU format and install it manually.
In its support documentation, Microsoft emphasizes:
“If you have not yet deployed the May 2025 Windows security update (KB5058385) and your IT environment includes Windows Server 2022 devices running Hyper-V, we recommend applying this OOB update instead. If your organization is not affected by this issue, you do not need to install this OOB update.”
IT administrators in need of this fix can download the OOB update here.
