Following the Trump administration’s initial decision in early April to grant TikTok’s U.S. operations an additional 75-day reprieve, a new executive order has now extended that grace period by a further 90 days, just as the previous deadline approached.
Since January of this year, the Trump administration has offered TikTok’s U.S. arm three such extensions, effectively shielding it from the “sell or be banned” ultimatum previously advanced by the Biden administration. As a result, the TikTok app has since reappeared on both the U.S. App Store and Google Play Store.
A White House spokesperson recently stated that President Trump does not wish to see TikTok completely suspended within the United States. The new extension, therefore, is intended to allow TikTok additional time to identify a suitable buyer—one capable of ensuring that American users can continue to enjoy the platform securely.
Meanwhile, earlier rumors had suggested that Amazon was interested in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations and had entered into preliminary discussions. Other reported suitors included a team led by YouTube personality MrBeast, backed by Roblox CEO David Baszucki; a rival bid from Project Liberty, comprised of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt; and even AI startup Perplexity AI, which allegedly planned to integrate TikTok’s short-form video functionality into its services.
