As previously reported, Microsoft Authenticator will gradually deprecate its password manager functionality. Account credentials already saved will be migrated to the Microsoft Edge browser, with Microsoft encouraging users to continue managing their passwords through Edge.
However, those unwilling to adopt Microsoft Edge should prepare accordingly. Beginning in June 2025, Microsoft Authenticator will cease to support the saving of new passwords. Subsequently, automatic filling and access to previously stored credentials will also be discontinued.
Microsoft has begun issuing in-app notifications within the Authenticator: “You can export your saved info (passwords only) from Authenticator until Autofill ends. Access your passwords and addresses via Microsoft Edge at any time.”
Users who tap “Open Microsoft Edge” at the bottom of the notification on iOS will be redirected to the system settings for autofill, where Microsoft urges them to set Edge as the default password manager—enabling autofill across browsers and apps.
This notice particularly concerns users who prefer not to use Microsoft Edge. They are advised to promptly export their account credentials and save them as a CSV file. It’s worth noting that Microsoft Authenticator only allows password exports, so users importing the CSV file into Chrome or Firefox may need to make manual adjustments for compatibility.
To export passwords, users can open Microsoft Edge on a PC, navigate to Settings → Profiles → Passwords, then select the export option from the adjacent menu. Once exported, the CSV file can be imported into Chrome or any other password manager.
Here is Microsoft Authenticator’s phase-out schedule:
- Starting June 2025, you will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator.
- During July 2025, you will not be able to use autofill with Authenticator.
- From August 2025, your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.
