Recent reports revealed that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been actively recruiting top-tier experts with the ambitious goal of advancing the development of superintelligent AI. Simultaneously, it was disclosed that Zuckerberg extended an invitation to Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI, to join his team. In conjunction with this move, Meta is said to have made a substantial investment in Wang’s company.
According to the latest updates, Meta has completed a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, effectively elevating its valuation to $29 billion. This strategic investment reportedly comes with a condition: Alexandr Wang’s transition into Meta’s ranks.
Wang later confirmed the news in an official statement, announcing that he would be bringing several members of the Scale AI team with him to join the Meta AI division. He will, however, retain his position on Scale AI’s board of directors. Meanwhile, Jason Droege, the current Chief Strategy Officer, will assume the role of CEO.
Although Meta has yet to disclose Wang’s precise responsibilities, he is expected to lead the newly established Superintelligence Lab—an initiative focused on pioneering breakthroughs in advanced AI.
This $14.9 billion investment in Scale AI marks Meta’s second-largest expenditure to date, following its $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014. Meta will acquire a 49% equity stake in Scale AI through the deal—significant, yet deliberately structured to avoid operational control. This stake size is believed to be a tactical decision aimed at avoiding antitrust scrutiny, particularly in light of past accusations from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission regarding monopolistic practices following Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.
Meta’s recent challenges—especially the underwhelming performance of its Llama 4 large language model—have sparked considerable criticism, leading to the delay of its high-parameter AI project, codenamed “Behemoth.” In response, Mark Zuckerberg has opted to personally oversee the company’s talent acquisition strategy, with the goal of regaining momentum in AI innovation.
Meta’s broader vision is to realize Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—AI that rivals human cognitive abilities and can perform a wide range of tasks with autonomy and intelligence. The company’s pursuit of superintelligent AI, however, goes further: aspiring to exceed the capabilities of the human mind itself and usher in a new era of transformative technological growth.
